Bethelite in Iraq—SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS
We have “adopted” Corporal Jermaine Owens of Bethel. Jermaine is a 2006 graduate of Bethel High School and is currently stationed in Iraq. Please feel free to send him an email letting him know that he is being thought of. Make sure to mention you are a member of First Congregational Church of Bethel. For information on what you can do to help out, contact Lori Cipot through the church office.
Email address: Semperfijo06@yahoo.com Dear Lori, I wanted to first off thank you so much for the email. I cannot express to you how nice it feels to hear about how much support we have back home.
Not a lot of people would chose willingly to do the things we do, but I always look at it as a way to protect the good left in people nowadays.
I have been in Iraq since September of last year. I am currently stationed in the Al Anbar province. Currently, my job title at the Rank of Corporal is a Single Channel SINGARS Radio Operator. Although the title doesn't sound as fierce as some of the others you may hear out there I can promise you Lori that it is demanding.
A normal day consist of me waking up around 0900 if there is nothing to really do, the desert is currently in it's winter months and the weather is rather cold at night. We manage, I am also act as the Motor Transport Non-Commissioned Officer and maintain and care for all vehicle in the communications platoon or the S6 section of the Battalion. I eat and hygiene just like everyone else. I stand radio watch as the Radio watch NCO from 1400 (2pm) until 2200 (10pm). During my watch I basically track my battalions coalition forces movement around the Area of Operations VIA Satellite and VHF radio. After my watch it is usually time for bed, I am mostly awake due to the fact that I am indoors for a good part of the daylight hours. This is the time I use for myself to answer emails and write letters and talk to friends via computer. And this process pretty much repeats itself day after day.
Currently I am on a mission which is supposed to be our last mission before we move to another location to conduct a "turnover" of our gear and prepare for the journey home. I am a part of a Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion and it is our job to be the most mobile sector of the Marine Corps. When I am back home I am stationed at Marine Corps Base 29 Palms. The largest Marine Base in the World totaling in over 100,000 sq miles of training area. We have our own air detachment and train closely the marines and sailors stationed in Camp Pendleton located near Ocean Side California. I am scheduled to be back on American soil no later than April with no exact date to give. I ask for a favor Lori that you pray for the family of one of our Marines who died 2 days ago on this mission, Drew Weaver, I ask you keep his family and friends in your prayers.
I cannot tell you how extremely grateful I am that you decided to adopt me. It fills my heart with joy to write to you. Thank you, feel free to pass my email address along and let the church know that I look forward to their messages. Thank you so much Lori and God Bless, Humbly, Corporal Jermaine D.
